Opta have partnered with the FA WSL for a few seasons now and have produced a mid-season report for 2018/19.
Here are the main takes for the Arsenal team and players:
Team statistics
With Arsenal top of the league and flying, at least until their last league game, it is no surprise to see the Gunners the leading the way in many of the stats.
They are number one in shot conversion with 42 goals and 26.8%.
City are second with 19.1% and 33 goals.
West Ham are third with 15.2% and 16 goals.
Arsenal are also number one for shooting accuracy which makes sense. They have 64.3% from 157 shots.
Bottom of the FA WSL table Yeovil are second with 59.4% of their 64 shots. That’s more than half the Arsenal total.
Liverpool are in third place with 53.4% and 88 shots.
Goals scored
Another interesting metric is the percentage of goals scored in the first and second half.
Manchester City have scored eleven goals in first halves and 22 in the second.
Reading have scored six and eleven. Bristol four and five.
Arsenal are ranked fourth with 19 goals in the first half and 23 in the second (55%).
The bottom team in that category is Everton with six goals in the first half and only one in the second.
Goals conceded
The reverse statistic is also available – the number of goals conceded in first and second halves.
Arsenal are second from bottom with 43% of their goals conceded in the second half with four and three.
Birmingham City are top with 88% of their goals conceded in the second half with one and seven. They clearly drop their performance level after half-time.
Manchester City are second with 67% of their goals conceded in second halves. It is exactly the same percentage as their goals scored.
Brighton are in third place with 61% of their goals conceded in the second hlaf with 11 and 17 goals conceded.
Passing accuracy
The passing accuracy statistic is good but, as we all know, it also can mean absolutely nothing if there is no end product.
As we also know, there is an end product at Arsenal to match up with their 81.2% accuracy from 5224 passes.
In second place, City have played more passes (6132) but with only 81% accuracy.
In third place comes Birmingham City with 5668 passes and 80% accuracy.
At the bottom of the table, Yeovil have comepleted only 53.9% of their 2341 passes.
Discipline
The Arsenal disciplinary record is excellent.
The team is bottom of the table with 89 points and 71 fouls conceded.
At the top, West Ham have 161 points, 128 fouls and 11 yellow cards.
Runners-up Liverpool have 144 points, the same as Reading but Liverpool have 111 fouls, Reading 108.
Liverpool have nine yellow cards and one red. Reading have 12 yellow cards.
It is funny to note that there have been only three red cards so far this season. One direct red card for Yeovil and two double yellows for Liverpool and Birmingham.
The leniency from FA WSL referees is a well-known problem.
Individual players statistics – top 20s
Goals
Arsenal have five players in the top 20 goalscorers, which is not a surprise for the top scoring team.
1. Anna Miedema 14 goals
4. Jordan Nobbs 9 goals
5. Danielle Van De Donk 8 goals
8. Kim Little 4 goals
13. Bethany Mead 3 goals
Assists
They also have six players in the top 11 assists, an incredible performance:
1. Anna Miedema 7
2. Beth Mead 6
5. Katie McCabe 4
7. Kim Little 4
8. Jordan Nobbs 4
11. Danielle Van De Donk 3
Combined goals and assists
Again, there is absolutely no surprise to see the Arsenal players at the top of the combined goals and assists category:
1. Anna Miedema 21
3 Jordan Nobbs 12
5. Danielle Van De Donk 11
6. Bethany Mead 9
7. Kim Little 8
The combined statistics shows how exceptional Miedema’s season has been so far.
The second-ranked player only has 14.
Jordan Nobbs and Danielle van de Donk have also performed well and there is no doubt that had Kim little and Jordan Nobbs been fit for the whole season, their stats would have been higher as well.
Overall, the half-season stats show that the Arsenal Women are a team that likes to take control of the game and the ball possession to create chances and opportunities.
