Stade Rennais have now made contact with Arsenal to learn about the availability of Emi Martinez ahead of a January bid, according to reports in France.

France Football report that Martinez has piqued the interest of Rennes, who have ‘questioned’ Arsenal about the goalkeeper. This is further to claims last week that the Ligue 1 club spoke to the Argentine international directly.

Yahoo Sport FR claimed Rennes are looking to replace current goalkeeper Tomas Koubek, who is reportedly leaving the club next month. Their search led them to Arsenal’s third choice ‘keeper, and they’ve ‘entered into contact’ with the 26-year-old over a move.

So far, Martinez has only made two appearances for Arsenal this season. One was in an academy match against Tottenham u23s in August, the other was against Qarabag last week. Although he only conceded one goal in the two games, and Arsenal won both matches, it doesn’t seem to have brought him any closer to regular starts.

Transfermarkt has Martinez’s contract as expiring in 2022, so perhaps there’s still time for a loan, rather than a permanent transfer. If he’s not getting game time now though, it doesn’t seem likely it will be different in six months time. That’s unless he’s counting on Petr Cech leaving and Arsenal making him the permanent replacement. We’ll see.
