Manchester United have a bit of an injury and suspension crisis ahead of their clash with Arsenal on Wednesday with multiple key players set to miss out.
United’s draw with Southampton on Saturday caused more than one problem for manager Jose Mourinho. For a start, Romelu Lukaku had to be withdrawn early with an injury, and he’ll now be a doubt for Arsenal. Marcus Rashford also came off early after a knock, but it appears he’ll recover in time.
Alexis Sanchez certainly won’t be fit, after suffering a thigh injury seemingly set to keep him out until January. Matteo Darmian, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo are all out as well, with Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly doubts.
Then there’s Ashley Young, who got himself suspended with a late yellow card, and Luke Shaw, who was another to come off injured.
As it stands, United will probably have to play with just one centre-back again, Phil Jones. Alongside him will be a midfielder, most likely Nemanja Matic or Scott McTominay. If Young and Shaw are both out, it’s anyone’s guess who starts at left-back. Perhaps summer right-back signing Diogo Dalot will have to fill in.
Arsenal have a terrible record at Old Trafford but, under new management, they have the chance to put that right. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
