With Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey seemingly confirmed to be on the way out, the English media have moved on to the next potential Arsenal departure in Nacho Monreal.

The Mirror are one of a number of English publications who wrote at the weekend about how Marseille are “targeting Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal”. They added that the Spaniard is “high on [Marseille’s] shortlist as they look for January additions”. Monreal is in the final year of his contract with the Gunners.

The information comes from an article by France Football, but it seems to have been misinterpreted. Looking back at the source material, it’s just an opinion piece about low-cost names who Marseille could potentially sign in January.

It’s not the club’s transfer shortlist, it’s just France Football coming up with ideas on Marseille’s behalf. There’s absolutely nothing in the article to suggest they have any inside information on the Ligue 1 side’s interest in Monreal.

Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno also makes the list, suggesting the French outlet believe Marseille are indeed on the hunt for a left-back. That’s as far as the story goes, the English media have just chosen to pretend there’s more to it.

More reliable reports recently suggest that Arsenal have opened talks with Monreal over a new contract. A popular figure with the fans, let’s hope he signs it and sticks around next season.
