Continental Cup: Liverpool facing elimination as Arsenal seek qualification

Matchday 4 in the Continental Tyres Cup and we might now see a number of teams qualifying for the quarter-finals by Wednesday night.

Injury-hit Arsenal are at home to Charlton, hoping to seal qualification for the knock-out stage with a win.

Let’s take a look at how the groups stand:

Group one North

Three teams out of six are in the running with the three championship sides unlikely to go through.

Bristol will be at home to Villa and need a win to keep their chances alive.

Manchester City are in the driving seat and a win at home to Sheffield would guarantee them qualification.

Birmingham are away to Leicester and a win would also see them through should Bristol fail to win on the night.

Leaders Reading have a bye, so all the chasing teams will try to close the gap before the final matchday in a week’s time.

Durham are away to Manchester United and are playing their final group game. They trail Reading by two points. Any result other than a win would see them struggle to qualify with only four or five points.

Liverpool and Everton have a rematch of last Sunday’s derby and the Reds will be looking to avenge the defeat that sent them tumbling towards the relegation zone.

Anything other than a win will see Liverpool eliminated from the tournament.

Chelsea have a 100% record and a win against Yeovil would see them go through.

Spurs in second place are away to London Bees and any positive result would keep them in contention.

Brighton are at home to Palace and both teams have an outside chance of qualifying should they manage to get a win.

Arsenal have a 100% record and will now face two Championship sides which means they should win at least one of those two games to qualify for the knock-out stage.

They will be at home to Charlton and then away to Millwall that signed our Development team manager and several players in the summer as well as hiring Pedro Losa as General Manager.

Millwall will be at home to Lewes, who need a win to be with a chance to go through on the final day.

Considering the current state of the squad, hopefully, Joe Montemurro will rest ALL the players carrying a knock and give the youngsters a game and a chance to prove themselves against a top quality Championship side.

Four of them were in the matchday squad on Sunday at Chelsea and it would be great to see them all four start the game.

Ruby Grant, Amelia Hazard, Ava Kuyken and Paige Bailey-Gayle would certainly benefit from playing against Charlton and Millwall.
