Unai Emery appears to let Juan Carlos Carcedo run things defensively for Arsenal, only taking over when the Gunners are back in possession, based on a video from Wednesday night.

The clip, posted by The Gooners Podcast on Twitter, shows Emery taking a back seat as Arsenal set up for a set piece. His assistant Juan Carlos Carcedo comes to the fore, barks some orders at the defenders, then goes back to sit down once the danger is over. Emery then retakes his place at the front of the dugout once Arsenal regain possession.

This division of duties is a smart tactic to get the best out of the team. There’s so much going on in a football match that it’s nearly impossible for one person to pick up on all of it, and to know what needs changing in each situation. Handing over defensive situations (or at least set pieces) to your assistant allows you to focus on other parts of the game.

It’s not something I’d noticed them doing personally, having not paid this close attention to the management team in previous matches. It might be worth keeping an eye on this weekend, to see exactly how the duo work together.
