Manchester City ‘hid’ £30.74m from UEFA investigators and ‘threatened to sue’ after learning they might be punished for breaking Financial Fair Play rules, according to Football Leaks.

After yesterday’s leaks, the Daily Mail reported on Saturday that City were ready to engage the ’50 best lawyers in the world’ to sue UEFA ‘for the next 10 years’ if the football governing body tried to punish them for breaking the rules.

Thankfully for them, FIFA president Gianni Infantino allegedly stepped in on their side. He reportedly went behind the backs of independent auditors and held secret talks to come to what Saturday’s Telegraph describes as a ‘favourable’ settlement.

As for what City had done to break those rules, the leaks claim to show that they hid £30.74m in spending from UEFA in their annual accounts. They also reportedly signed three contracts with Abu Dhabi companies as much as 80% higher than market value.

Essentially, they used those sponsorship deals so their owners could feed money they hadn’t actually earned into the club.

None of this should really be news to anyone. We’ve all known for years that there’s no possible way City could have as much money as they do without significant investment from their owners or over-inflated sponsorship agreements.

It just highlights, yet again, that you can cheat the system and get away with it. UEFA won’t do their job and punish you as long as you’re rich enough.
