8 things we learned about Arsenal against Wolves

Arsenal signed off for the latest international break with a lucky draw against Wolves to extend their unbeaten run to 16 and their winless run to 3.

Fascinating

It has been a fascinating season to date and with just two games left before we enter what could well be the toughest month of the season, Arsenal’s great run has come to a stuttering halt.

Sure, we aren’t losing games, but we aren’t winning them either. A draw against Liverpool was a good result only in the context of obtaining maximum points against Palace and Wolves. That we couldn’t manage to do that means we need to get more points from the big games and it’s been a long time since Arsenal managed to do that.

So, what did we learn from the game?

Remembrance Sunday still matters

It was hard not to feel a little more emotional this Remembrance Sunday than usual given what is going on in the world at the minute.

On a day that also saw right-wingers marching through London, wearing poppies while hailing Hitler, we all need to do better to stand up to fascism where we see it rising.

The minute’s silence at the Emirates was impeccably observed by all involved.

Iwobi is rubbish on the right

Alex Iwobi is no good on the right, even Unai Emery admits that but he spent a lot of the first half much more centrally. His first run through the middle was effective and should have resulted in an in-direct free in the box (at least) when he was blatantly obstructed. Stuart Atwell waved play on.

His passing, however, was horrendous. At least three times he tried to play what seemed a simple pass to Bellerin on the wing only to pass it straight to the defender. He was hooked at halftime and nobody had any complaints.

Despite being replaced at halftime, he wasn’t the worst-rated Arsenal player. Four players got a lower score than Iwobi – Bellerin, Kolasinac, Xhaka, and Aubameyang.

Granit Xhaka still can’t concentrate

Granit Xhaka has been getting a lot of plaudits lately but his lack of awareness of what was around him leading to Wolves opening the scoring after just 11 minutes was incredibly poor and reminiscent of the player who was so heavily criticised under Arsene Wenger.

There’s a more miserable commentator than Stewart Robson

Don Goodman
Don Goodman

He was unbearable. In fact, I was just constructing a tweet after only 10 minutes because he had been so relentless harsh on Arsenal when Wolves scored, not really backing me up.

The Arsenal crowd, that had been doing its best to get the team going, came in for criticism, as did just about everything Arsenal did. It was a hard listen, for sure and actually made me long for Stewart Robson. Yes. He really was THAT bad.

Who was he? It took until the second half to find out it was Wolves legend, Don Goodman.

Unai Emery isn’t afraid of the halftime hook

Alex Iwobi didn’t enjoy the best first halves, but he was hardly alone.

When it was clear that Matteo Guendouzi was coming on it could have been for any number of players including Xhaka who had been poor and Lucas Torreira and Mesut Ozil who both picked up knocks.

It’s great to see a manager make his subs based on who is playing poorly rather than who is his favourite and who might just be a bit tired after 70 minutes.

It’s ok to kick a goalkeeper in the face

When the Wolves player swung his foot into Bernd Leno’s face as the keeper was on the ground, Don Goodman said the player had ‘every right to go for that’.

I’m pretty sure that footballers have a duty of care and swinging your foot at full force from a standing position towards a ball directly in front of the keeper’s face on the floor isn’t a ‘right’.

Law 12 states that players much not act in a careless or reckless manner.

Arsenal and Cardiff are the only sides not to have a lead at halftime in the Premier League this season. Before this game, Wolves had also been on that list. We play Cardiff on 29 January so they can look forward to ending that run then if they don’t before.

Crying for more injury time when you’re sh*t for 85 minutes is stupid

The Emirates crowd and Arsenal team weren’t best pleased that there were only five minutes of injury time on Sunday. There should have been more but there’s something desperate in complaining about the number of injury time minutes.
