David Ospina is earning a lot of praise in Italy for his recent performances for Napoli, and he looks to be nailing down a starting spot in goal for the side.

When Ospina first went on loan to Napoli, there was a worry among Arsenal fans that he’d have a poor year and the Gunners would be stuck trying to sell him off again next summer. At almost 31 years old with only 12 months on his contract, the goalkeeper would hardly be likely to attract mega-millions.

That fear seemed to be coming true, at first, when Ospina conceded five goals in his first two games. Now he’s making a much more positive impact on the team though, and the Italian media are taking notice.

La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote this weekend that although Ospina’s arrival was “greeted by a great scepticism”, he’s now “managed to convince critics and supporters”.

They add that Alex Meret is now more likely to return to the bench than the starting XI when he recovers from injury, and give particular praise to Ospina’s performance against PSG in midweek.

As well as that showing against PSG, where the Arsenal loanee had to make five saves to help Napoli to a draw, he impressed with a couple of clean sheets against Sassuolo and Liverpool in his previous two games. Hopefully, he continues to nail down a spot with a good showing on Sunday night against AS Roma.
