Players are questioning the standard of officiating in England after a terrible challenge fractured Kim Little’s fibula and still only resulted in a yellow card.

On Tuesday, Arsenal announced that Little suffered a fractured fibula in the 5-0 win over Chelsea. She’ll now miss up to 10 weeks of football to recover.

The most shocking part is that Chelsea midfielder Drew Spence only picked up a yellow card for the incident. She goes through the back of her Arsenal counterpart with no chance to win the ball, in a scissor challenge that clearly showed her frustration at the fact her team were well beaten in footballing terms.

Olympique Lyonnais and England star Lucy Bronze gave her thoughts on the challenge.

“Real shame for Kim, Arsenal and the league,” she wrote on Twitter. “Fans come to watch players like her play. But repeatedly let down by the standard of officiating (not all officiating, may I add). But there’s a real underlaying (sic) problem somewhere.”

Arsenal were 4-0 up at the time, 64 minutes into the game, and looking like some of the dominant Gunners sides of old. The team now have 21 goals in four league games this season, sitting top of the table with a game in hand already.

We’ll have to wait and see if they can keep that form up without Little. As Bronze says, that’s a real shame, since we shouldn’t have to wonder if the league’s top teams can survive without their best players.

If the likes of Drew Spence can make these sorts of challenges without serious punishment, there’s no reason to think they’ll stop doing so. It’s up to the officials to stamp down on it much more effectively than they’ve done here.
