Ian Wright thinks Arsenal need to try and get Danny Welbeck tied down to a new long-term contract, as he sees the striker as a valuable asset to the club.

Welbeck showed his worth again on Saturday in a brief substitute appearance against Watford. It was his interception and tackle that put the ball at the feet of Lacazette, who played a quick one-two with Iwobi before Özil finished off the chance to make it 2-0. None of that would’ve been possible without the forward winning the ball back.

Add that to the three goals Welbeck has in two starts this season, as well as another goal from his 54 minutes coming off the bench. Wright told Sky Sports he believes the striker is earning a contract extension.

“Yes, I certainly do,” Wright said (via Goal). “Where he is right now, behind [Alexandre] Lacazette and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, coming off the bench with his experience. And the fact that he is capable of scoring goals against all types of opposition.

“He’s someone that I think Arsenal should definitely try to sign up for the long term. He’s valuable to Arsenal. I think he’s got eight to 10 goals in him over the course of a season. In the current climate, I don’t think Arsenal can afford to let someone like that go.”

In current form, Welbeck should easily hit eight to 10 goals for the season. Considering he already has four, he’s well on his way to that sort of tally. At the moment he’s even pushing Aubameyang for starts, considering how effective they both look out wide.

Hopefully, Arsenal and Unai Emery take note and get the forward tied down. He might not always be first-choice at the club, but he adds a lot to the squad.
