A source at Hertha BSC insists that Arne Maier won’t leave the club in the January transfer window, despite links to the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Juventus.

We covered reports this week that Arsenal sent scouts to watch the midfielder playing on multiple occasions, both in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. The Mirror now report that Juventus have joined the Gunners and United in the race for the 19-year-old, but all three clubs face a fight to sign him any time soon.

According to a Hertha BSC source: “Arne will not leave this season.”

The midfielder, dubbed the “new Toni Kroos” in the Mirror’s report, still has a contract until 2022 with his current club. However, that deal also reportedly contains a £10m release clause, so it may be difficult for the Bundesliga club to stop a swoop from a major European club.

On the other hand, even if Arsenal are willing to pay the clause, they’d still have to convince the player himself. With Maier’s age, and the competition for places in North London, it probably wouldn’t be too difficult for Hertha to sway the young midfielder in favour of staying. Until next summer, at least.

The u19 Bundesliga champion broke into the senior side in Berlin last season, making 17 Bundesliga appearances, as well as a handful in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal. He’s since played the full 90 minutes in all of Hertha’s matches this season. If he can keep up his good form, perhaps we’ll see him getting a big move in the near future.
