Just two games into the campaign, people are already starting to write off Arsenal’s chances of winning anything this season. One bookmaker has the club at 1/9 to go without a trophy in all competitions in 2018/19, and they’re not the only ones to think that’s the most likely scenario.

If you look at the odds for Premier League winner, League Cup winner and FA Cup winner, Arsenal are in the same place in every case, sixth favourites. That’s not exactly a surprise, since those three competitions contain all ‘big six’ clubs at this stage, and right now the Gunners are the lowest ranked of those teams in the league.

The Europa League is a bit more promising. Though Arsenal are far from the odds-on to win it, they’re second only to Chelsea in terms of the bookies’ favourites.

Unai Emery is probably a big part of that high ranking. He’s won the competition before on multiple occasions, and he has a lot of time to work with the current squad before the matches get going.

Whilst there’s a small possibility Arsenal get knocked out of the League Cup in September, and fall way behind in the Premier League as well, Emery has a bit more time to work with in the Europa League. The games are more spaced out, and don’t reach the knockout stage until next year.

At the same time, I wouldn’t write off Arsenal’s cup chances just yet. Emery won both domestic cups in each of his two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, so he clearly knows how to put together a cup team. Let’s hope the team can overcome the odds this season and lift some silverware next year.
