Reiss Nelson is expected to sign a new deal to keep him at Arsenal for the next five years.
That’s according to The S*n’s Daniel Cutts, who wrote on Twitter “EXCLUSIVE: More good news for #Arsenal fans. Reiss Nelson on verge of signing new deal. Thought to be five-years. All agreed, just not been announced yet. Very highly-rated at club.”
Nelson’s contract with Arsenal expires next summer and there had been some concern amongst a small section of fans regarding the lack of chatter about a renewal.
In his report on the matter, Cutts claims that Nelson will sign a new five-year deal after impressing during pre-season.
Nelson has been with Arsenal since he was just nine-years-old and has emerged as one of the brightest talents to come from Colney in a long time.
His new deal will also come with a ‘bumper’ payrise. It’s not clear how much he currently earns, but Alex Iwobi was on £30kpw prior to signing his new contract while Krystian Bielik, who is nowhere near the first team, is currently on £25kpw.
Nelson signed his first professional contract with the club two years ago. Speaking in April about signing a new deal, Nelson said, “It is a big achievement to sign for a big club like Arsenal so I’m just delighted with the contract and hopeful that I can sign it soon.”
The April interview was given just two days before Arsene Wenger announced he was leaving the club. While it’s not clear what the hold up has been in getting the deal finalised it is most likely just down to the turbulence behind the scenes at the club than anything more sinister.
There was some suggestion that Nelson was holding the club to ransom and many fans were concerned about the lack of gossip around a new deal. There is no evidence to suggest this has been the case and it seems we can all stand down now.
