Arsenal are keen on making a late deadline day signing of Sander Berge from KRC Genk, with Tottenham Hotspur also interested, according to reports in Norway.
Norwegian outlet Dagbladet write that both North London clubs have ‘concrete interest’ in signing the player at the last minute. Berge’s agent, Mike Kjolo, is reportedly in England, but refusing to comment on the possibility of a transfer.
For those who don’t know, Berge is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder who joined current club Genk in 2017. Despite his young age, he’s already made 45 senior appearances for the team. In fact, he would’ve made even more by now if it weren’t for his injury problems last campaign.
Berge tore a muscle in October 2017, and didn’t return to the pitch for his club until May 2018, when he made a couple of substitute appearances. Now, he’s back playing full matches again, which is good to see and has clearly put Arsenal back on his case.
There’s really not much time to get the deal over the line before the deadline at 5pm today, but at a valuation of around £8m it’s one of the only vaguely believable transfer stories left in the current window. A bigger deal would simply get too complicated at this stage.
