Alex Iwobi is set to sign a new four-year contract with Arsenal despite reports that Unai Emery isn’t interested in keeping him at the club.

It was only on Sunday that I was covered reports from Italy that Iwobi was wanted by Lazio because he wasn’t wanted by Arsenal and now he’s a ‘key man’ that Emery wants to build around.

So say the Mirror, at least.

They say talks with Iwobi have been ongoing over a new deal since the end of last season after he signed an extension back in 2015, taking him to 2020.

Il Messaggero wrote that Iwobi, who reminds them of Felipe Anderson, could turn out to be ‘an opportunity not to be missed’.

They believe Arsenal would want a fee in the region of €25m for him.

Iwobi, 22, has certainly stalled since he broke through into the Arsenal first team under Arsene Wenger. Many hoped that under Emery he could kick on again and get back some of the sparkle we saw when he first made himself known to us.

Unlike a few others, Iwobi has been included in Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Singapore and Emery gave no hint that the Hale End graduate’s future was at risk. As I wrote at the time, I am very skeptical of reports linking Iwobi with an exit but I guess we should just wait and see how things develop.
