Chuba Akpom and Joel Campbell don’t appear to be in Unai Emery’s plans for next season, despite many other fringe players getting pre-season chances.

We’ve seen already that new head coach Emery is willing to give Arsenal outcasts a chance over the next few weeks of preparation. Carl Jenkinson played 45 minutes against Boreham Wood, as did fellow returning loanees Lucas Perez, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Emi Martinez.

Akpom, on the other hand, didn’t play a single minute of the opening pre-season fixture. He was in training with the first-team in the build up to the game, and he’s back training with them again afterwards, but the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson got chances ahead of him on the pitch at the weekend.

Meanwhile, the signs look even more clear in the case of Joel Campbell. Campbell took part in the World Cup group stage, like Mesut Özil, Mohamed Elneny and Alex Iwobi, but whilst the club website announced those three will come on tour with the squad, the Costa Rica international didn’t get a mention.

In fact, Campbell still doesn’t even have a squad number, after Lucas Perez took it last summer. The Arsenal social media team forgot he existed during the World Cup, posting about the club’s three players in action that day, before fans pointed out Joel was a fourth.

Arsenal head out on tour on Sunday, so by then we should have the full squad listing from the club. If Akpom and Campbell aren’t on it, with a year left on their contracts, we have to assume they’re set to move on.
