Thomas Lemar will be playing in Spain next season as AS Monaco and Atletico Madrid confirmed they had reached an ‘agreement in principle’.

Lemar has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in this window after Arsenal missed out on him.

The Gunners were keen to bring Lemar to the Wengerdome but the lateness of Manchester City’s bid for Alexis Sanchez last summer meant they were left without the time needed to complete a massive €100m deal for the Frenchman.

Links with Arsenal continued for a while but the arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January saw Arsenal’s name drop away from the race for his signature.

Liverpool, however, were still in the chase and it looked at one point as if they were going to bring him to Anfield this summer.

“The two clubs will continue to work in the next few days to find a final agreement,” the joint statement said on Tuesday as reported by Le Telegramme.

That’s another name we can scratch from the gossip list, at least.
