Mateo Kovacic says he wants to leave Real Madrid this summer for regular football, and Arsenal are one of a number of teams interested, according to reports.

Speaking to Spanish outlet Marca, Kovacic revealed that he hopes to leave his current club this summer, since he knows it’s too difficult for Real to give him game time.

I would like to play more in Madrid because I love football and being in the field, but I know that it’s hard for Real,” he admitted. “I understand the situation, but the best thing for me is to go to a club where I can play regularly. If I do not play, I’m not happy.”

According to Italian outlet Il Corriere del Calcio, Arsenal are one of the teams interested in the Croatian. The Gunners are looking for a replacement for the departing Jack Wilshere, and could offer more game time than Real Madrid.

However, they’re not the only team in the mix. The reports from Italy suggest Juventus are also after the 24-year-old. Meanwhile, rumours in England link Tottenham Hotspur to a move.

Kovacic reportedly has a €50m (£44m) release clause in Madrid, so he wouldn’t necessarily come cheap. Especially if there’s so much competition for his signature.

Given the way Arsenal have spent so far this window though, they might have some money left over for a big move if they sell off some fringe players. Plus, Real Madrid might not request the full clause if they agree with the midfielder that he won’t be a starter next season and would be better off leaving.

We’ll have to wait and see.
