Arsenal scouts are set to watch Portugal face Spain in the two countries’ World Cup opener on Friday, with Gelson Martins, Goncalo Guedes and Raphael Guerreiro all potentially taking part.

Reports on social media suggest Arsenal representatives will be in attendance to watch one of the biggest clashes of the World Cup group stage. Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising, but it does add further fuel to the fire that the club could be after Portuguese winger Gelson Martins this summer.

The Portuguese Players’ Union (via BBC) state that Martins has terminated his contract with Sporting Lisbon, leaving him free to join any club he wants without a transfer fee. However, they add that a court would have to establish the existence of “just cause” before the contract termination could be considered legitimate.

Sky Sports recently reported that Arsenal are one of a number of clubs interested in Martins, which backs up rumours from the player’s home country that the Gunners have already submitted a couple of €30m bids for him. The winger’s release clause with Sporting is €60m (£52.4m).

If they’re not there for Martins, Arsenal might be watching Goncalo Guedes or Raphael Guerreiro. Guedes is currently ‘for sale’ at PSG, as they try to raise funds to comply with Financial Fair Play.

Meanwhile, Guerreiro is playing for Dortmund, after Sven Mislintat brought him to the club in 2016. As we know from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Mislintat isn’t shy about going for his former players in Germany.
