Arsenal could try to bring in Gelson Martins on a free transfer, as the player reportedly considers terminating his contract with the Portuguese club.
Ahead of the Portuguese Cup final, supporters attacked the Sporting CP training ground, injuring some of the players. Rui Patricio and Daniel Podence have reportedly already begun the process of terminating their contracts with the club as a result.
According to the Express, Martins now also wants to leave the club, and could cancel his contract as well. If he does so, Arsenal would be able to sign him on a free transfer, despite the fact Sporting were previously requesting any suitors pay his release clause of €60m.
Arsenal aren’t the only club after the player. The media also linked Juventus to a move even before these latest free transfer reports. Undoubtedly the fact he could be available for nothing will generate even more interest.
From an Arsenal point of view, there aren’t many pacey and skillful dribblers in the current squad with end product. They could do with someone who can relieve pressure when the team are pinned back, or provide a moment of inspiration when they’re trying to break a side down.
The 23-year-old had a strong campaign in Portugal, scoring 13 goals and assisting the same number in 52 matches. Perhaps he could be the perfect player to fill the gap in the squad.
