Joao Virginia is the latest Arsenal player to receive a call up from his country’s u21 manager to take part in the Maurice Revello Tournament starting this weekend.

Portugal youth coach Helio Sousa announced his squad this week, and Tuesday’s Record reports that Virginia will take part in the tournament. Portugal are set to face Canada, Japan and Turkey in Group C, with matches starting on Saturday 26th May.

Meanwhile, England are in Group A with China, Mexico and Qatar. Aidy Boothroyd picked two Arsenal youngsters for his team, giving opportunities to Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Eddie Nketiah.

Maitland-Niles has played matches for the u21s before, making his debut last October. However, this is Nketiah’s first call up to the top English youth side, so it’s a big moment for him.

Based on his efforts for the u19s, he shouldn’t have any trouble. The 18-year-old has nine goals and one assist in 10 matches for the younger age group. A step up in age always causes more problems, but Nketiah has been playing and performing impressively for the Arsenal u23s and first-team this season. He should do just fine.

Hopefully both England and Portugal progress from their groups, and then maybe we’ll see Arsenal’s youth striker face up against their goalkeeper in the knockout rounds.
