Arsenal are planning a complete defensive overhaul this summer, with every member of the back-five under threat, according to reports.

The Independent write that the club want “a whole new back five to replace this season’s failed defence”. Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi apparently already have a list of targets, and the defensive positions are top of the list.

To an extent, the Independent have a point with their assessment of the current back-line. The defence has failed to make the grade repeatedly this season, and Arsenal must invest in it this summer.

David Ospina and Petr Cech haven’t been close to good enough, so a goalkeeper is a priority. Laurent Koscielny’s injury problems have really caught up with him now, and Shkodran Mustafi had an average season at best. Centre-back is clearly somewhere the club need a bit of experience and quality.

Nacho Monreal had a pretty good campaign, but with mistakes and injuries littered in. Meanwhile, Hector Bellerin is running the entire right-hand side of the pitch on his own, with no help on the pitch and no players on the bench to give him a rest.

At the same time, I doubt the club will replace them all in one go. You can’t buy an entire defence in one summer and expect it to gel instantly.

I think they’ll buy in most of those positions, if not all, but it’ll be a mixture of first-team players, players for the future and back-ups. We’ll have to wait and see though.
