Alex Iwobi picked Arsenal over West Ham United as a young player, and says he’s enjoying working under Arsene Wenger, but he’d like to play centrally more often.

Iwobi spoke to SuperSport TV, and revealed he had the choice between the two London clubs as a young player, but ended up going with the Gunners. He clearly thinks he made the right decision, and praised his manager despite recent fan criticism.

“He’s been great,” Iwobi said. “He doesn’t put you under pressure, rather he lets you know privately what you have to work on.”

The 21-year-old has played almost equally on the wings and in the middle this season, but if given the choice between the two, he clearly prefers his central role.

“I like to play behind the striker, a No 10, like a false No 9,” he said. “I will pick passes but I need to score more goals.”

That’s pretty much the same conclusion the Arsenal fans are coming to at the moment. Iwobi’s passing game is very good, as highlighted by a couple of assists in the recent win over Southampton. However, he hasn’t scored in a few months now, and missed a great chance against CSKA Moscow.

If he can work on further improving both aspects of his game, he still has a big future ahead of him.

People often forget just how young Iwobi still is, and how much time he still has to improve. There aren’t many players in football who are good enough for the top clubs before the age of 21. He just needs to find the confidence to put a few more chances away now.
