The 4 positions Sven Mislintat wants to buy this summer assessed

Sven Mislintat wants Arsenal to sign players in four different positions this summer, according to reports, in what is shaping up to be a significantly busier window than last year.

Last summer, Arsenal only signed Sead Kolašinac and Alexandre Lacazette, despite a number of high profile sales.

The Daily Mail write that the new head of recruitment at the club has identified the four areas he thinks Arsenal need to strengthen this time around, to help them push on next season.

Let’s take a look at each one:

Goalkeeper

This one won’t come as a surprise to anyone.

Both David Ospina and Petr Čech’s contracts expire in 2019, and neither have had the best season.

In the last week they’ve had a bit of a reprieve, with Ospina keeping a clean sheet at the San Siro and Čech finally saving a penalty, but that probably won’t keep them around long term.

Ospina admitted last year he wants a new challenge, and Čech will be 37 when his current deal ends.

As a result, Arsenal either need to sign a new first-choice keeper, a new back-up, or both.

Last week we had a look at who they could sign in more detail if you want to check that out.

The team need a top goalkeeper to come into the team now. The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Özil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan don’t have a few years to wait on a developing talent.

For that Arsenal are going to have to look into the market, because no one at the club is making a good case for it to be them.

Centre-back

Arsenal have a number of centre-back options at the moment, but none that are really making a good case to be a starting pairing.

Laurent Koscielny has been well below his best in recent months, and Shkodran Mustafi has generally performed even worse. Calum Chambers has also looked a bit shaky.

Like Ospina and Čech, the three of them have had a much better week, and hopefully that continues for the rest of the campaign. Even if it does though, their inconsistent form and injury problems are concerning.

Per Mertesacker is retiring at the end of the season, so Arsenal are one centre-back down before the window even opens.

Nacho Monreal seems to have reversed his position change from full-back to centre-back, and is now back out on the left. The Spaniard can’t maintain his fitness any better than the others, anyway.

That leaves Rob Holding and Konstantinos Mavropanos, who are both still a bit young to be first choice.

What Arsenal really lack is an experienced defender who could form a consistent partnership with one of the current options for the foreseeable future.

With any luck, that’s what Mislintat has in mind for a replacement.

Holding midfield

After selling Francis Coquelin in January, Arsenal are now very short on dedicated holding midfield players. Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny sometimes play the position, to varying degrees of success, but Mislintat clearly thinks the team need an upgrade.

If Santi Cazorla doesn’t come back from injury, which looks more and more likely, the squad is down to four central midfielders in total.

That’s unless you count Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Unfortunately after the home leg against Östersunds FK, he’ll probably have to wait a while for more midfield chances.

When you look at the injury record of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey, as well as the fact they could leave this summer given their expiring contracts, Arsenal might need a new box-to-box midfielder as well.

For now though, Arsenal just need to find someone to protect the defence.

The team have conceded more goals than anyone in the top seven, and that’s just as much about the midfield’s lack of protection as the defenders’ failings.

Finally, the article claims Mislintat wants a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal.

The Spaniard is in great form when available, but he’s only available about half the time recently. At 32 years old, his injury problems are unlikely to suddenly clear up for good.

Earlier in the season, Wenger also admitted the flanks might be a bit too demanding for the player now.

Sead Kolašinac is showing some improvement, but the manager still seems to have reservations about the defender.

As a result, it makes sense that Arsenal want to bring in a player for the future. Someone who can deputise when necessary, learn from the experienced players in front of him and eventually take over the position.
