Francis Coquelin is set for surgery after the former Arsenal man ruptured his Achilles in training.

Reports emerged on Friday that Coquelin had picked up a serious injury and had to be taken to hospital, by ambulance, after picking up the injury as Valencia prepared for their game against Alves today [Saturday].

“It was on his supporting foot as he began running,” Valencia manager, Marcelino, told reporters.

“He was alone. His colleagues who heard it said it was as if some wood had broken.

“He fell down as if he had been kicked.

“It is a very big injury to a player who had demonstrated his human qualities and had adapted perfectly.

“We are very sad about it and we wish him a quick recovery. In all my career it had never happened to me.

“I don’t know what his recovery period is. A safe surgical procedure is necessary.”

Coquelin was a surprise sale during the January window and has already established himself as a starter with his new side.

He will now miss the rest of the season and it is not clear when the 26-year-old is expected back in training.
