Sol Campbell thinks England need a player like Jack Wilshere, and says the midfielder should be on the plane to Russia this summer if he can stay fit.

Campbell spoke to talkSPORT about the 26-year-old after his England call-up on Thursday. He had a lot of praise for Wilshere, who he says is only limited by his fitness record.

“I think Jack is a wonderful player,” Campbell said. “The only thing that has held him back is injuries and that’s such a shame, because he’s got great tenacity, great footwork and speed and knowledge. He’s got great drive and he’s got a good goal in him too.

“I’m pleased for him. England need that type of player who can play in tight areas and make thing happen. He needs regular games, he needs to build up that stamina and he needs to get that rhythm going.

“If he stays fit all the way until the end of the season he should be in that squad, for sure.”

In all honesty, Wilshere hasn’t quite been at his best in recent weeks, but he looked a lot better against AC Milan on Thursday.

When he’s on his game he can skip past opponents with ease, link up play nicely and win free-kicks regularly. He just needs to find a bit of consistency at the moment.

Perhaps all the speculation about the academy graduate’s contract is having an impact on his form. Wilshere’s current Arsenal deal expires at the end of the season, and he’s stalling on the club’s proposed extension.

Hopefully soon they’ll clear up what’s going to happen one way or the other, so the England international can focus on finishing the season well and preparing for that possible trip to Russia.

For now, he has a break from club football and a couple of international friendlies to prove his worth. Good luck to him.
