Arsenal could sign Schalke midfielder Max Meyer on a free transfer, according to reports.

Meyer is out of contract in the summer and is now being linked with both Arsenal and Barcelona.

According to Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), Arsene Wenger sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old recently when he played against Leipzig.

Meyer has been linked plenty of times with Tottenham, but the German press now believe Arsenal are contenders for his signature.

Spanish media, on the other hand, believe Barcelona are very interested.

According to Merca Futbol, Meyer is on Barcelona’s list of targets for the summer.

Merca Futbol have quotes from a Schalke club official on the midfielder’s contract situation.

“Max is happy and at home here, but we have to find an economic agreement that can convince him,” they report.

Schalke have had issues with contracts recently.

Sead Kolasinac ran down his contract and joined Arsenal for free.

Leon Goretzka is another who is out of contract in the summer, and has agreed to join Bayern Munich.

Now Meyer, a product of Schalke’s excellent academy, could go as well.

Meyer began his career as an attacking midfielder, but has recently been playing in a deeper position.

He’s been compared to Santi Cazorla, which could explain why Arsenal are interested in signing him.

Schalke offered him a new deal worth €4.5m (up from €3.3m-per-year) but the player rejected that prompting the Germans to return with an offer of €5.5m. This equates to approximately £93.5kpw. His current wages are approximately £56kpw.
