Arsene Wenger has suggested that Alexis Sanchez is earning more at Manchester United than what’s been reported.
Many sources have taken a stab at what Sanchez is earning at Manchester United.
The only consensus is that it’s a lot.
The Mirror have their own figure. They believe he’s earning £600,000 per week, a figure other, more respectable outlets, have also quoted.
At least, that was before their latest story.
According to them, Arsene Wenger has hinted that the Chilean is earning even more than that.
They carry no quotes from Wenger himself. Instead, they refer to a club Q&A session for Arsenal executive box holders.
At that event, Wenger was asked if the reports about Sanchez’s wages were true. Wenger’s response was to point the ceiling, possibly signifying it was even higher than reported.
At this point, the exact figure isn’t all that important.
The important thing is that his demands were beyond what Arsenal were willing to pay.
Wenger referenced this in his pre-Everton press conference, saying: “You know you will see [players running down their contracts] more and more, that players go to the end of a contract. I said that many times. Why? Because there’s expected inflation on the wages.
“The demands are so high that you cannot always give in. The Alexis example is a big one.”
Sanchez’s wages being so high is convenient for the club, as it serves as a good reason to let him go.
In the future, the club will hope to avoid the same situation with its key players again.
