Alex Iwobi suggested in his post-Everton interview that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang didn’t know who some of the Arsenal players were before he joined the club.

A reporter asked the Nigerian international what Aubameyang was like in their first training session.

Iwobi responded: “He’s fun. He’s learning faces but he’s definitely enjoying his time here and there’s still more to come from him.”

It would be strange if Aubameyang needed to learn the faces of players like Mesut Özil and Petr Čech. He should know them, given their long-term status on the world stage.

Many of the Arsenal squad are experienced internationals, and the team played in the Champions League last year. As a fellow professional footballer, you’d expect the striker to know most of them, at least.

Then again, perhaps Iwobi just means the lesser known players.

Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson both trained with the first team on Friday. There’s also no reason why Aubameyang should necessarily know the likes of Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Nearly all fans in England will know them, but outside the country they’re hardly world famous names right now.

Plus, maybe the striker just doesn’t watch much football.

I’d expect all players to watch their own matches, and upcoming teams in their own league. Other than that, I’m not worried if he doesn’t tune in for matches like Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal.

In fact, I hope he didn’t. It’s probably better he learns about his teammates a different way.
