West Ham are reportedly keen on signing another Arsenal midfielder other than Francis Coquelin this month – Mohamed Elneny.

David Moyes has allegedly prioritised signing a defensive midfielder during the January transfer window and Elneny is reportedly on his shortlist. Also on the list are Joe Allen, Steven N’Zonzi, William Carvalho, Jonjo Shelvey and even Francis Coquelin.

Elneny signed for Arsenal in January 2016 as cover, seeing as Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini’s legs kept disintegrating. He was never supposed to be a first-team star. The 25-year-old isn’t particularly creative, but he’s endeared himself to Arsenal fans by doing just enough.

He’s consistent and although he won’t venture out of his comfort zone, he does the basics well. He also brilliantly bantered Alexis Sanchez, Gooners’ worst enemy right now.

Obviously, that’s not enough for a long-term future at the Emirates, but fans don’t feel the same level as frustration towards him as they do towards Coquelin.

OElneny has made 56 appearances for Arsenal, scoring two goals. The Egypt international has only made three Premier League starts this season though.

In July, it was reported that Arsenal accepted a £10m bid for Elneny from Leicester City but the midfielder rejected the move. It therefore seems likely the Gunners would be willing to entertain bids again six months on.

If he does move, hopefully it’ll be for a club where he’s genuinely going to get more game time.
