Arsene Wenger is still in favour of video assisted refereeing (VAR), although I’m not exactly surprised considering it helped Arsenal get let off two penalties during our League Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea.

VAR was called into action twice during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw in the League Cup at the Bridge. Both times, it helped Martin Atkinson wave away Chelsea’s penalty claims when usually, they would have been given.

Therefore, the fact that Wenger’s still pro-VAR makes sense.

“What you want is to improve the system that exists,” Wenger said during his pre-Crystal Palace presser. “There will be some hiccups, certainly. Personally I’m still a supporter of it and I believe we have to move forward. You cannot imagine in the future it will not be used.”

Wenger has always been in favour of VAR. The boss believes that if the Premier League wants to be taken seriously, we need to keep up with modern football and prevent referees from making massive mistakes.

Most people agree while some reckon it slows the game down too much.

The debate is particularly relevant to Arsenal right now.

Since December, we’ve had a penalty for a hand-ball given against us which shouldn’t have been, and diving in the box awarded as a spot-kick to the opposition.

Before that, we also had Manchester City’s offside goal allowed to stand during our defeat at the Etihad. The decision changed the game.

You can understand why Wenger feels so strongly about it.

Of course, as the boss says, there are kinks that need to be ironed out, as with any new technology. The amount of time the officials take watching the video is one. But with perseverance this should be worked out.
