With Alexis Sanchez joining Manchester United, it’s time to say goodbye to the 29-year-old and all the goals he scored in Arsenal colours.
Whilst the Chilean’s time in North London wasn’t the start of a new era like many hoped, he did give fans a number of special moments to remember. Most recently, the goal in the North London derby finally put Spurs fans back in their place. This season was a poor one for the forward, but he always had that sort of thing in his locker.
At Wembley, Sanchez put on a show every time. Back in May, he scored the opening goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea. Before that, he scored the extra-time winner against Manchester City in the semi-finals.
It was the same story in the competition back in 2015. Against Reading in the semis, the former Barcelona man scored a brace. Then he added a screamer in the final against Aston Villa, plus an assist for the opening goal. The Gunners have to give thanks to Sanchez for those two cup wins.
Although all his goals in the other competitions never meant anything more than a Champions League place at best, they all brought Arsenal’s beleaguered fans a bit a joy. Particularly the many goals against the big-six sides, when pride was on the line.
I can’t say I’ll remember Sanchez fondly, after a year and a half of watching him force his way out of the club to join a direct rival. I can still respect what he gave on the pitch at his best though, and thank him for that. It’s definitely time for all parties to move on now.
