Mesut masterclass & Super Jack: Arsenal player ratings v Chelsea

Arsenal may have only won a single point against Chelsea but they deserved all three… if you forget how we defended.

Here’s how they all rated individually:

Defence

Petr Cech – 6

Despite making three saves, he went the wrong way for Eden Hazard’s penalty yet again.

Calum Chambers – 6

The 22-year-old was once again disappointing at centre-back. He gave the ball away a few times in dangerous areas and seemed to lag when getting back.

He only won a single tackle out of the five he attempted.

Shkodran Mustafi – 7

The centre-back, despite not being great, was our best defender again.

The German won five aerial duels, made four clearances and five interceptions.

Rob Holding – 6.5

The youngster didn’t do a bad job. He completed 98% of his passes. However, only won one defensive duel.

Next up, midfield

Midfield

Granit Xhaka – 7

The midfielder was quiet except for the foul he committed, which led to a yellow card. He completed 88% of his passes and won three tackles.

Jack Wilshere – 8

The midfielder was once again keen and scored the goal which put Arsenal ahead. It was clear he wanted to make a good impression and the atmosphere of the London derby spurred him on.

He also completed 85% of his passes, completed two dribbles and won an aerial duel.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 8

Another huge, mature performance from the 20-year-old. He made a superb last-man tackle to deny Chelsea another goal and won six tackles overall. However, he could have done better for Chelsea second.

Hector Bellerin – 7

This was one of the wing-back’s best performances of the season. The 22-year-old has been really out of form for around a year but he made Alonso look ridiculous in the first half.

However, he was caught out of position once or twice, leaving the three centre-backs exposed. This is a habit he seems to have gotten into and it’s part of the reason we struggle.

What’s more, while the penalty we conceded was soft, it was stupid of him to stick a leg out on Eden Hazard. He came back to win us a point by scoring but the spot-kick shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Next up, forwards

Forwards

Alexis Sanchez – 8

A decent match from the forward. He had four shots and linked up well with Ozil, as always. He was, however, dispossessed four times – the same amount as Hazard – more than anyone else on the pitch.

Interestingly, he only completed one dribble, which is unlike him, and 71% of his passes.

Mesut Ozil – 9

Another stunning performance from the playmaker, who was playing even deeper than usual.

He was everywhere at once and really connected everyone. He was a joy to watch.

If the Chelsea penalty hadn’t taken the wind out of everyone’s sails, perhaps he would have had even more of a positive impact on the game.

He made three key passes, all of which were in the first half.

Alexandre Lacazette – 7

It’s hard to see where the striker is supposed to be fitting into this current team. His movement, when he was included in play, was brilliant but overall he had a quiet game.

He should have buried at least two of his three shots.

Next up, substitutes

Subs

Danny Welbeck – 6

The striker was quiet and didn’t really have a chance to do much after he came on.

He didn’t have a single shot and completed just 22 passes.

Theo Walcott – N/A
