Greek centre back Konstantinos Mavropanos was recommended by new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat.

Arsenal completed the signing of Mavropanos from Greek side PAS Giannina for a fee believed to be between £1.8m and £2.2m depending on where you do your reading.

The signing is typically out of left-field for Arsenal, who quite frequently find young players from the most obscure places.

They don’t always work out, but it seems Mavropanos will arrive as a recommendation of new Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat.

That could be significant, as the former Dortmund scout has unearthed plenty of gems in his career.

For example, he discovered Shinji Kagawa while he was playing for Cerezo Osaka in Japan.

The midfielder went on to become a key player during Borussia Dortmund’s title successes in 2011 and 2012.

He also spotted Christian Pulisic, Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ousame Dembele, Mats Hummels, Sven Bender, Neven Subotic, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Rapahel Guerreiro to name just another nine in his impressive scrapbook.

It seems that Mislintat scouted Mavropanos for Dortmund before his move to Arsenal.

There is, of course, no guarantee that the 20-year-old will be a success at Arsenal.

However, when a scout with such a good track record thinks he’s worth signing, then perhaps there’s something about him.

It’s not the glamour signing fans were looking forward to, but this is what Mislintat is known for.

Let’s see how Mavropanos gets on on loan for the remainder of the season now that we’re all paying attention to him.
