After being interested in Anthony Martial since his days at Lyon, could Arsene Wenger finally be about to sign the forward?

In 2015, Wenger accused Monaco, Martial’s former club, of telling porkies when it came to selling the forward, who was then just 19. He also revealed that Arsenal had been watching him since his days at Lyon, where he rose through the ranks between 2009-2013.

The teenager had just signed for Manchester United for a whopping £58m and Wenger found it hard to hide his disappointment.

Although Wenger claims Arsenal have tried to sign a lot of players, Martial seemed like a no-brainer. His Thierry Henry-esque style make him the perfect Wenger signing. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Or was it?

According to the Evening Standard, United have offered Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Alexis Sanchez, who’s almost certainly heading to Manchester this week. However, Wenger is apparently keen to inquire about the availability of Martial.

Since signing for United, the France international has appeared 121 times, scoring 34 goals and providing 25 assists. He has just 18 months left on his deal with the Red Devils.

While it’s a nice idea that Wenger could finally get to sign the forward, who’s still only 22, I don’t see Jose Mourinho selling him to Arsenal in 100 years.

Wenger can inquire all he wants but I don’t see him being successful.
