3 signed and 7 sold, £50m spent, £95m made: Arsenal’s 2017/18 business

Arsenal’s 2017/18 business has been about offloading the deadwood rather than bringing in talent.

In total, Arsenal have only spent just under £50m on new players this season. In contrast, we’ve made £95m shipping out players we don’t want.

The Gunners have signed three players; two in the summer and one in January (so far). We’ve also offloaded SEVEN with more likely to leave come June.

Here’s how Arsenal’s transfer business for 2017/18 looks:

IN

Alexandre Lacazette – £47.7m

The 26-year-old sign for Arsenal for a club record of £52m, including add-ons. The striker had netted 37 goals in 45 appearances for Lyon during his final season in Ligue 1.

Although he’s found it hard to bed in at a new club, he’s still scored eight goals and provided four assists in 23 Premier League games.

Sead Kolasinac – £0

The Schalke left-back was a breath of fresh air when he first barrelled over from the Bundesliga on a free.

The 24-year-old hasn’t been as impressive during recent weeks and has been out with an ankle injury this month but considering we didn’t pay anything for him, I doubt Arsene Wenger’s losing much sleep over his poor defensive work.

Konstantinos Mavropanos – £2m

Mavropanos signed from PAS Giannina this month and is yet to feature for Arsenal’s first team.

The 20-year-old has played for our u23s though and was impressive.

OUT

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – £35m

With one season left on his contract, Arsenal allowed the Ox to sign for Liverpool.

No one’s sure how we’ve managed to get the Merseyside club to agree £40m (including add-ons) for the injury-prone 24-year-old but there you go.

Theo Walcott – £20m

This week Theo completed his £20m move to Everton.

The 28-year-old had spent 12 years in north London and had 18 months left on his contract.

Francis Coquelin – £12.6m

Coq spent a decade at Arsenal but was never good enough to become a truly great defensive midfielder.

The 26-year-old’s move to Valencia is a sensible one.

Wojciech Szczesny – £11m

A transfer most Arsenal fans still don’t get.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is now loving life at Juve after we sent him out on loan to Roma for two years and then decided not to bring him back from Italy.

Many assumed he was set to take over from Petr Cech… apparently not.

Gabriel – £10m

The centre-back’s move to Valencia, much like Coquelin’s this month, seemed to happen overnight.

Gabriel was a decent squad player but no one was too devastated with his decision to go.

Kieran Gibbs – £7m

The left-back had been at Arsenal his whole life but injuries held him back.

At the age of 27, it was time to say goodbye and West Brom was the perfect match.

Yaya Sanogo – £0

The striker never really hit his stride at Arsenal.

He only ever made 11 appearances for the Gunners in the Premier League. He scored once in the Champions League.

The 24-year-old now plays for Toulouse.

TBC

Alexis Sanchez – Out

The Chilean only has six months left on his contract with Arsenal and is expected to complete his move to Manchester United soon.

The 29-year-old has reportedly signed a four-and-a-half year deal, which will see him earn £14m-per-year after tax.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – In

Mkhitaryan will almost certainly be part of the swap deal for Alexis.

Arsenal almost signed him for £25m in 2016 before United snapped him up instead.
