Arsenal could lose Olivier Giroud to Chelsea a week after Alexis Sanchez joined Manchester United. Would any other top-six club sell two top strikers to two rivals in the same window?

Selling Alexis to United was bad enough but Arsenal didn’t really have a choice. The Chilean only had six months left on his contract, and if the Gunners didn’t allow him to swan off to one of their rivals they would lose him for free in the summer.

At least Arsenal got Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who they tried to sign from Dortmund in 2016, as part of the deal. However, Giroud still has 18 months left on his contract. Chelsea are another rival and their only weak position is up front.

Therefore, by either loaning out or selling the French international to Antonio Conte, we’re directly strengthening them. It’s complete madness and I can’t see another top-six team pulling this.

I know Arsene Wenger likes to keep players happy and, as L’Equipe reports, Giroud wants to stay in London. But that doesn’t mean we have to sell the 31-year-old to a team we’re supposed to be competing against for a top-four spot.

The potential deal has come about because Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to complete his £60m move to the Gunners any minute. Dortmund would only sanction the move if they could get a replacement, which was always rumoured to be Giroud.

However, it seems they’ve decided to sign Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi on loan instead. This means that it looks as if Giroud will be moving across London to the Blues. Honestly, selling two of our top strikers to two rivals in the space of a week is beyond ridiculous.
