After the clash between the Manchester clubs at Old Trafford, Ian Wright revealed Wimbledon were the team that caused the most off-field problems at Highbury.

According to reports there was a row between Manchester United and Manchester City players, leaving Mourinho covered in milk and Arteta with a cut above his eye. The confrontation all started when the Portuguese manager grew angry at the way the City players were celebrating their 2-1 win.

Ian Wright wrote in The Sun about his memories of similar incidents in his playing days, recalling,“From my playing days, I can only remember one team acting like that at Highbury —and that was the old Wimbledon ‘Crazy Gang’.

“They would roll up wearing any clothes they could find that morning, one of them would be carrying a big beat box and they would play their music ridiculously loud and bang on the walls.

“It was meant to let you know they had no respect for the opposition, their traditions, or their stadium. But that was the Wimbledon way. It wasn’t a surprise coming from them. And to be fair, I thought some of the garage music they played was pretty cool, way ahead of its time!”

‘Crazy Gang’ was the nickname for Wimbledon FC during the 1980s and 90s, because of their habit for playing practical jokes on each other off the pitch and playing in an often unprofessional yet simplistic manner on it.

Commentator John Motson coined the nickname after Wimbledon won the FA Cup, beating Liverpool. The media’s regular use of the name afterwards probably inspired the players to live up to it, as much as anything else.

Generally you don’t hear about too many off-pitch brawls between opposing teams nowadays, or old fashioned intimidation tactics like those Ian describes above.

But you never know, maybe the latest derby fracas will inspire a comeback.
