Why is he suddenly terrible?: Arsenal player ratings from West Ham washout

Arsenal put in another terrible performance on Wednesday night, this time against West Ham, with numerous players letting the side down again.

Here are how all the players got on individually.

Defence

Petr Cech – 6

Although he kept a clean sheet, the goalkeeper had a proper Manuel Almunia-moment in the second half when he came off his line to claim the ball only to miss it and fall over. It was close and Arsenal not losing was more down to luck than skill.

Interestingly, Cech made zero saves throughout the entire game and one claim.

Hector Bellerin – 5

Another poor match from the right-back. In fact, he disappeared for most of it.

Laurent Koscielny – 6

Where did Kos the Boss go? What’s happened to him? Why is he suddenly terrible? Another sloppy performance from the centre-back, this time as part of a back four rather than a back three. He made two massive errors, both of which almost led to West Ham goals.

Nacho Monreal – 6

As much as I love Nacho, his best position is as a left centre-back in a back three. Obviously, he’s also strong as an out-right left-back. However, as a centre-back as part of a back four, he looks a little clueless.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 7

The 20-year-old was keen to get involved and, for the most part, put in a solid performance. He’s still a little naive when it comes to challenge but considering he was played at left-back, he did a decent enough job.

His crosses to Giroud were also really good.

Next up, midfield…

Midfield

Alex Iwobi – 6.5

Iwobi looked sharp for about 70 minutes, getting involved from the get-go and even hitting the bar in the first half. However, later on in the second half he began to look overly frustrated and was subbed off for Welbz.

Granit Xhaka – 5

The midfielder was poor again. His three long-range shots will not be appreciated by Arsene Wenger.

Jack Wilshere – 7

Jack looked sharp and his build-up play with Olivier Giroud in particular was lovely to watch. In the 23rd minute, the midfielder played a one-two with the Frenchman before gently touching the ball towards Alexis who had a shot. Beautiful football.

Jack also completed 92% of his passes, put through one key pass and had three shots.

Next up, forwards…

Forwards

Mesut Ozil – 6

Not a terrible performance from the German but not as solid as his displays during the previous few matches.

Alexis Sanchez – 5.5

The Chilean started off well, as he’d obviously listened to Arsene Wenger’s advice about not coming so deep. However, within minutes he’d reverted back to usual wasteful self.

The 28-year-old had six shots, only two of which were on target and was dispossessed twice.

Olivier Giroud – 6

The striker looked strong at first. He was linking up with Jack well and if he’d gotten onto one of Maitland-Niles’ crosses, we could have gone ahead in the first half. However, later in the match, the 31-year-old lost his mojo a bit and quieted down.

This is probably why Wenger keeps playing him as a super-sub. He’s really good in short bursts but not over 90 minutes.

Next up substitutes…

Subs

Danny Welbeck – 4
