Arsène Wenger says he expects Jack Wilshere to sign a new contract at Arsenal, as long as they can agree financial terms with him.

Wenger was speaking to a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Crystal Palace on Thursday. Inevitably, journalists asked him about Wilshere’s contract situation.

The England international is out of contract at the end of the year, and hasn’t agreed new terms. Wenger responded that whilst a new deal isn’t agreed, he expects the 25-year-old to stay. They just need to sit down and agree finances.

The news is a boost for Arsenal fan’s hopes of keeping the midfielder. Some were concerned that Wilshere might leave for playing time, especially with the World Cup coming up. But from Wenger’s latest comments it seems like that’s not going to be a big issue.

Wilshere has started three league games in a row, which probably helps the situation. Before that, the academy graduate hadn’t started any of the previous 16 in the competition. Now that he’s in the team again, he’ll likely be more receptive to the Gunners’ offer.

Not only that, but the Arsenal man has played well. Other than Mesut Özil, Wilshere has probably been the best performing midfielder in the last few weeks, in my opinion. Hopefully both parties should be on the same page for negotiations now.
