Chris Sutton says Arsenal should have been awarded a penalty against Southampton, after Alexandre Lacazette was tripped in the area when taking a shot.

Arsenal had a good shout for a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday afternoon. Alexandre Lacazette was caught late by a challenge from Southampton defender Maya Yoshida after he had taken a shot.

There were few appeals during the game, but replays showed it was a nailed-on penalty. Chris Sutton certainly thought it was.

“Absolute penalty, anywhere on the pitch that is a foul,” he said, as reported by the Daily Mail. “Lacazette has a shot and is completely wiped out afterwards. It has to be a penalty, it’s a foul.”

Arsenal have been involved in a fair amount of penalty controversy this season.

We should have had two penalties in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United and could have gotten a result from the game had they been correctly awarded.

The Gunners needed a late penalty against Burnley to get the three points. The decision to give that penalty didn’t go down well with the opposition fans, who thought Aaron Ramsey had dived.

Arsene Wenger was upset about a penalty that was given against Arsenal in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. Likewise, there was another poor decision in the 2-1 defeat to Watford.

With the standard of refereeing being as it is in the Premier League, there are going to be a lot more contentious decisions in the future.
