Newcastle have reportedly joined Arsenal and Manchester United in the race for Red Bull Salzburg striker Dimitri Oberlin.

The Magpies could allegedly cut Oberlin’s loan spell at Basel short with a £20m bid in January, claims the Sun. This is despite Newcastle currently undergoing a takeover and therefore unlikely to have a spare £20m just lying around. Rafa Benitez would also have to offload 23-year-old Aleksandar Mitrovic.

If Newcastle were to swoop in, they could potentially steal the Swiss striker from under Arsenal and Manchester United’s noses. However, it’s also thought that Basel have an option to sign him permanently once his loan spell has come to an end, which makes it unlikely that he would end up anywhere else.

Oberlin is in great form, which means he’s reportedly attracting the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. In fact, Juventus, Roma, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Napoli have all been linked, as well as the Gunners and United.

The 20-year-old, who signed for Salzburg from FC Zürich in 2015, has scored eight goals in 23 appearances while on loan at Basel this season.

The likelihood is that we’ll never know if Arsenal – or any other club – were interested because Basel will probably choose to sign Oberlin permanently at the end of the season if he continues this form.
