Ryan Giggs claims that Manchester City can’t be compared to the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal’s Invincibles because they’re yet to experience the kind of success these two clubs have.

Giggs, who made 672 league appearances for United, admits that while the gap between the Red Devils and their rivals is closing, they’ve got a long way to go before they truly catch up.

“There are more academy players coming through at United than there are at City. United won two trophies last year, and City haven’t won any for a couple of years,” the 44-year-old told Sky Sports.

“They are obviously very good, and with the spending power that they have got, every year they get closer, but still United, with the record that they have got, to go with the top manager and the top players, are still on top, but the gap is closing.

“With that spending power, and the coach that they have got, they will be very difficult to stop them over the next couple of years, because they are playing unbelievable football.

“But until you win that trophy, you can’t start comparing them to Arsenal’s Invincibles or other teams who have won the Premier League.”

Giggs has a point.

However, interestingly, the same logic isn’t often applied to Arsenal and Tottenham. At least not by large sections of the media.

City are far closer to catching up with United than Spurs are to Arsenal.

The Red Devils have won the title 20 times, the FA Cup 12, the Champions League three times and the Europa League once. An impressive trophy haul, which makes them one of the most successful clubs in the world.

Although they’ve not been Premier League champions for four years, since 1992/93, they’ve won it consistently.

City, on the other hand, have won it just four times in their history and only twice in ‘recent’ years (2012 and 2014). However, they HAVE won titles and are looking as if they have a decent shot in Europe this season as well.

When you compare this to Arsenla’s north London rivals, although Arsenal haven’t won the title in 13 years, Spurs haven’t won it since 1961.

Therefore, it seems a bit odd that Spurs are often said to have overtaken the Gunners despite not winning anything, and City aren’t spoken about in the same relation to United.
