Manchester City and Arsenal want Jonny Evans in January. Now van Dijk has joined Liverpool, they’ll be all the more desperate to complete the transfer.

Liverpool announced on Wednesday that the Southampton centre-back will join the club on January 1. Manchester City reportedly wanted the defender, so they’ll now have to turn to other targets.

The Daily Mail write Evans is one of those targets, and Arsenal also want the 29-year-old. City just went their 20th game unbeaten, so Pep Guardiola is likely to do anything he can to keep that run going.

If Evans is the player they need to do that, you could see the Sky Blues going all in for him. From an Arsenal point of view, that’s not encouraging. The Manchester club spent £52m on Benjamin Mendy in the summer, and £45m plus £5m add-ons on Kyle Walker.

Arsenal have only spent that much money on one player in their history – Alexandre Lacazette. So clearly City are more likely to offer big money for a defender than the Gunners.

Plus, Arsene Wenger’s men have chased Evans for two summers now, and failed to land him both times. So there’s no guarantee that they’ll work things out on the third time of asking.

In all honesty, I think it would be better for the club to look elsewhere.
