Martin Keown believes that Arsenal’s recent performances are the beginning of the end for Arsene Wenger.

The former Arsenal defender gave that verdict after he saw us draw 0-0 with West Ham last Wednesday and is unlikely to have been moved by the tepid 1-0 win over Newcastle this weekend.

Arsenal struggled to break West Ham down and were fortunate not to have lost the game after Javier Hernandez hit the bar in the closing stages. Against Newcastle, they did their best to throw some points away but couldn’t manage it in the end.

Keown has taken the team’s recent showings as a sign that Wenger will not last much longer at the club.

“It is looking like the beginning of the end for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“Since signing his new contract, there has been no re-emergence that has allowed Arsenal to compete with the best.

“I was astonished by Wenger’s interview after the 0-0 draw with West Ham. I felt he was accepting the performance.

“We knew that West Ham sitting deep would be an issue but Arsenal did not have a cutting edge.”

Keown went on to label Arsenal a cup team, and the stressed the need to do better in the league.

“Arsenal have become a cup team. On any given day they can be better than anyone else, such as their FA Cup semi-final and final victories over Manchester City and Chelsea last season, but they lack consistency.

“The league is what really defines you. Teams become champions because week in, week out they are the best.”

Having just called Arsenal a cup team, Keown suggested that the only way for Wenger to save himself is to win the Europa League. However, he doesn’t believe this Arsenal team can do so.

“Wenger can redeem things by winning the Europa League and getting Arsenal back into the Champions League. If the team continues to lack a cutting edge, that is not going to happen.”

Arsenal got back to winning ways against Newcastle on Saturday but were still wasteful in the final third.

Despite our current run of form, anyone not named Manchester City has struggled for consistency this season.

Due to that, finishing in the top four isn’t impossible, even for a side as wasteful as Arsenal.
