With the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere out of contract in the summer, most people have forgotten about another Arsenal player whose deal runs out at the end of the season: Heather O’Reilly.

O’Reilly signed from Kansas City in January 2017. However, the three-time Olympic goal medalist only signed a year-and-a-half contract.

Unfortunately, we have reason to believe that the Gunners won’t be extending the midfielder’s deal any further.

This means that she’ll leave at the end of the season.

How’s O’Reilly getting on at Arsenal?

Although short-term contracts are common in women’s football, this is mainly because there’s so much uncertainty surrounding funding.

Even then, it’s fair to say that O’Reilly’s move to north London from the US hasn’t exactly been show-stopping.

However, from the beginning, it was suspected that the midfielder mainly came in to inject some experience in the Arsenal side, which she certainly has done.

The 32-year-old has made five FA WSL appearances for the Gunners this season and scored just once. Plus there are issues with her fitness as she struggles to complete entire matches.

This raises the question of whether the US international, who’s been capped 231 times, aims to continue the sport for much longer.

Moving from America, where she’s played her entire career, to London was a brave step.

It’ll be interesting to see if she stays in the UK after her Arsenal contract expires.
