Olivier Giroud says he has the World Cup in his head almost every day, and he’s considering whether to leave in January.
Giroud was speaking to L’Equipe in France, in a documentary about the Frenchman to be aired on Monday night. In the programme, they asked him about his situation at Arsenal, with the World Cup coming up in the summer.
“The World Cup,” he said. “I have it in my head every week, almost every day. Every time I enter the field, it’s to be the most effective and stay in the World Cup goal.”
On leaving in January: “He (Didier Deschamps) told me the things he had to tell me, which is quite logical and what I understand. He wants me to play more.
“It’s sure that in the end, even in January, I still have to ask myself the question. It will not be easy to find the right solution and make the right decision. But we will study the opportunities.”
It sounds like Olivier hasn’t made his mind up yet, but the rumours of concern for his World Cup place seem to be true.
That’s hardly surprising. France have currently got one of the most talented squads in the world. Deschamps won’t want to waste the opportunity to get the best out of his players, so if any player isn’t playing regularly for their club side, the safer option is to pick one of the many other options on the sidelines.
Alexandre Lacazette, Anthony Martial, Kylian Mbappé and Antoine Griezmann are all fighting with Giroud for a starting spot. None of them bring the same physicality that Olivier does, so he has an edge in that sense, but Deschamps has already shown he’s willing to change the system, as he did in the recent friendly against Germany, so nothing is guaranteed.
Giroud is Arsenal’s second top scorer for the season after Lacazette, so hopefully the Gunners aren’t too quick to let him go.
Giroud has been linked with Southampton, Everton, and West Ham today [Sunday].
