Chilean media hailed Alexis as a ‘marvel in an Arsenal jersey’ after the game against Manchester United despite him losing possession 34 times.

In Arsenal’s win over Spurs, Alexis looked something like his former self, scoring and creating opportunities for his teammates. But in the matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United, he was nowhere near as effective and has struggled in games all season.

However, parts of the Chilean press disagree, with an article on the match against United in emol beginning as follows: “Alexis Sánchez continues to marvel in the Arsenal jersey. The Chilean striker not only shines with his goals, but also for his talent at generating clear chances for goals.”

That’s not to say Alexis didn’t have his moments against United. The ball to Ramsey created the only goal Arsenal scored on the day, and he was only denied a goal of his own by the second part of a fantastic double save by David De Gea.

Unfortunately, that was all overshadowed by the 34 times he gave possession away to United. His bizarre attempted flick at the edge of their box allowed the Red Devils to counter and score their third of the game, effectively killing the tie when the Gunners were on top. Even creating goals for your team isn’t good enough if you’re helping the opposition score just as many.

Alexis can finish chances, and occasionally his chipped through balls find their intended targets to great effect, but he consistently breaks up the Gunners’ passing moves and gives opponents opportunities.

The media back in Chile may not want to hear it, but Sanchez should be doing much, much better. Imagine the uproar if Alexis Sanchez had done similar against United…
