Olivier Giroud believes a point away to Southampton was a good result with the Gunners were fortunate not to throw the game away after a poor start despite Wenger telling them a good start was what they needed.
Giroud came off the bench to add yet another late goal to his tally, earning Arsenal a draw. It was a Premier League record-equalling goal, as he matched Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s total as a substitute.
But Olivier said the Gunners were lucky to even have the chance to score an equaliser, as he told BT Sport: “The boss said we wanted to start strong and finish strong but at the beginning of the game we’ve been caught.
“Charlie (Austin) did well and could have scored a brace but fortunately for us it was 1-0 and we could come back at the end and it was a good point. We are pleased with this point because it’s always difficult to play here.
“I always try to bring something for the team when I come on the pitch. Today we missed players in the box so I tried to bring (that). It was a good cross from Alexis, and I try to be in the right place at the right time.”
Most fans were probably hoping that Arsenal would come away from St. Mary’s with a win, but considering how poor the team were for much of the match, Giroud is probably right to say that the point isn’t a bad one.
As in the game against Manchester United, Southampton could’ve been out of sight in the early stages, so a draw perhaps more than the team deserved.
As for what Giroud brought to the game, once again he stepped up with a crucial header.
It’s far from the first time. In the last season and a half we’ve seen an the Old Trafford equaliser, a late winner against West Brom at the Emirates, an equaliser against Bournemouth in the 3-3, a winner against Sunderland when it was 1-1, as well as a goal against Leicester on the opening day.
Arsenal should be thankful they still have him as an option. But will they have him after January? Even Giroud doesn’t know that…
